Welding requires the use of an arc or a beam of electrons which can be disrupted by magnetic fields causing welding magnetism problems. Welders have encountered welding magnetism problems on various welding projects throughout their careers. These welding magnetism problems are caused by magnetic arc blow which can be a serious problem for welding projects causing defects in the weld and increasing costs due to time delays. A magnetic arc blow is the sideways deflection of the welding arc. Magnetic arc blows are caused by the interaction of a magnetic field and the welding arc. If high levels of magnetism exist in any material to be welded it has a magnetic field. When the welding arc interacts with this magnetic field a deflection of the arc occurs moving it away from the point of welding. Magnetic arc blows can be very frustrating to welders, causing defective welds, and delays in welding schedules, consequently increasing costs.
High levels of magnetism are most common in steel but can occur in various materials. Any time you continuously move a piece of metal back and forth against another a magnetic field is created. Impact stress is one of the most common causes for pipelines and sucker rods to become magnetized. In addition, if a pipe is in the earth's magnetic field such as when buried, the pipe can become magnetized over time. Magnetic clamps or residual magnetism can induce a magnetic field. The effect of magnetism depends on the welding project, an estimate is that fields 30-40 gauss will cause problems to welders and result in disruption of the welding arc and possibly defective welds. In addition, it is estimated that arc instability can occur even with fields 10-30 gauss.
